On Ash Wednesday, 1 March we once again begin the penitential season of Lent with the imposition of ashes on our foreheads as a stark reminder of our mortality and need for on-going conversion. The Church invites us to embrace the traditional Lenten practices of prayer fasting and almsgiving to turn away from sin and selfishness and prepare our hearts for the celebration of the Paschal Mystery of Our Lord’s saving passion, death and resurrection. Ash Wednesday, 1 March 2017 Lent begins with Mass and the imposition of ashes. Masses: 7:00 am at St. Mary Hasell Street 12:05 pm at Cathedral 6:00 pm at Cathedral No confessions on Ash Wednesday Seven Habits to Holiness Say the Morning Offering first thing after you get up, dedicate the day to the glory of God. Fifteen minutes of quiet prayer, preferably done before the Blessed Sacrament, but this can be done at home or outside. Join Mary (Lk 10:38) and just site at the feet of Jesus and listen. Fifteen minutes of spiritual reading. This could be a systematic reading of the New Testament or lives of the Saints. Attend Holy Mass and receive Holy Communion in a state of grace. (Of course, this presumes a frequent trip to the confessional.) Pray the Angelus at 12 Noon or the Regina Coeli¬† during Eastertide. Pray the Rosary “sitting at the school of Mary and contemplating her Son.” Make a brief examination of conscience each night before going to bed. Review the day…make an act of gratitude for the good done and act of contrition for the areas in which you failed. Confession Going...
